The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is designed to deliver a fundamental level of protection on a monthly basis for machines running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003even a minimal protective level being designed to identify and remove prevalent malicious software. Malware like Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom is specifically targeted by the Removal Tool for which Microsoft promised to issue an update on the second Tuesday of each month. “When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%debug folder,” Microsoft described its tool. As it provides only the basic security necessities, Microsoft has advised all its customers to implement additional anti-virus products.
